Editor
Heidemarie Z. Weidner is Professor Emerita of Rhetoric and Composition at Tennessee Technological University and directed the Writing Program there from 1993-2001. She has been with Under the Sun since its beginning in 1996, first as an associate editor and later, in 2001, as its editor. She has numerous academic publications and has also published creative nonfiction. She lives in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Editorial Board
Chuck Acheson is a graduate student and teaching assistant for the Department of English at the University of Florida, where he studies in the Comics and Visual Rhetoric program. Chuck holds Bachelor’s degrees in History and Communications from Tennessee Tech and completed his Master’s degree in English there in 2014. From 2014-2015, he served as an adjunct faculty member in the
English department of TTU.
Suellen Alfred is Professor Emerita of English Education at Tennessee Technological University and has been with Under the Sun since 2011. For ten years she edited the Tennessee English Journal with Linda Null. Recently she served with Linda Null as the editor of the “Personal Reading” column of the English Journal. She is the co-author with Betty Roe and Sandy Smith of Teaching with Stories: Yours, Mine, and Theirs. She also co-edited with Maggie Vaughn Southern Voices in Every Direction, a collection of works of emerging writers. In 2015, she published a collection of personal stories entitled From the Mountains to the River: Mostly True Stories Worth the Tellin’ together with Joyce Milligan Tatum and a collection of poems entitled Branches. Both titles are available on Amazon.com. Suellen Alfred lives in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Martha Highers is a writer, teacher, and nurse. She has taught English at Tennessee Tech University, Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Southern University of New Orleans, and Abu Dhabi University. She has published numerous poems, stories, and essays. For the last five years she has worked as a medical/oncology nurse at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She lives in Cookeville.
Laura Kiesel is a freelance writer whose articles and essays have appeared in The Guardian, Al-Jazeera, Vox, The Manifest-Station, Modern Loss, Orion, and Earth Island Journal. She lives in the Boston area, where she also teaches writing workshops to at-risk youth.
Ann Jared Lewald teaches Learning Support Writing and Reading at Tennessee Technological University. She is also a poet and has published numerous poems. She recently participated in an Oxford Round Table in ESL. She has been an associate editor for Under the Sun since 2005.
Jere Mitchum is Associate Professor Emeritus of English at Tennessee Technological University having taught courses in American Literature and Technical/Professional Writing during his tenure at Tennessee Tech. He has been with Under the Sun since 2014. His interests include computer graphics, vocal music, and travel. He has sung in choirs, Barbershop quartets and community choruses for more than 30 years.
His travel destinations include Europe, Australia
and the Far East.
Randal D. Williams, B.S., M.A., has led a life of creative non-fiction. He has worked as a field archaeologist, university Instructor of English, historic preservationist, and director of cultural resources management, among other things. Mr. Williams currently lives in the hills of rural Tennessee, the land of his ancestors, with his wife, dogs, and bees. He serves as chief creative officer and writer for his own consulting company. In his spare time Mr. Williams writes short fiction, poetry, and plays the blues. He is also compiling a non-fiction volume recounting notorious familial murders in the Appalachian region of Tennessee. He has been an associate editor for Under the Sun since 1996. Presently, Mr. Williams is working towards a PhD, examining the dichotomy of the sacred and the profane in American roots music, specifically early country music and blues.

Christina U. Schmidt is a photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia. She specializes in travel, landscape, and sports photography. Christopher M. Schmidt has a Bachelors degree in Architecture from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He has worked on a castle in San Diego, CA, a homeless shelter in Boulder, Co, and is now working for WD Partners in Columbus, OH. He has also taught an architecture portfolio class. Christopher was instrumental in designing the cover for Under the Sun’s print copies and our journal’s earlier website. If you visit our previous website, you will see that we have retained several of his designs for our online version. In his spare time, if there is any, Chris designs web sites, builds furniture, paints murals for his girls, and has finally finished working on his deck … under the sun.
